In the years between 1890 and 1920 - a period known in the U.S. as the Progressive Era - women struggled to win the vote and also to renegotiate the terms of male-female relationships. In novels, short stories, and poems, women writers, voicing their frustrations and their dreams, made a significant contribution to American literature. This course will focus on short stories from early 20th century writers: Kate Chopin, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Susan Glaspell, Zora Neale Hurston, and Sarah Orne Jewett..
