Where, When and How to Go Birding

Instructor: Paul and Margot Haertel

Location: the first (May 3) class only will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Wendell Gilley Museum, 4 Herrick Road, Southwest Harbor; the four subsequent classes will be field trips, meeting at 8:00 a.m. at sites to be announced.

Description:

The course will consist of one 3-hour indoor session, which will be a refresher course of the fundamentals of bird watching, and four field trips to be determined. In this class, participants will be able to brush up on their “birding by ear” skills.

Please note that the field trips will be twice a week. The first class will be indoors and start at 9:00 am. Field trips will start at 8:00 am. Students need to have binoculars and need to be able to walk a mile or longer over sometimes rough trails and to stand for long periods of time.


Instructors: Paul and Margot Haertel - Paul has a BS in Forestry from Michigan Tech. He spent 40 years in the National Park Service. His teaching experience includes Park Planning at the University of Maine, various seminars in USNPS, and ASC birding classes. He is an avid birder and bird carver. Margot has a BS in Biology from Sul Ross State College. She has been a children’s librarian for 25 years, a Peace Corps biology teacher for three years, and has taught ASC birding classes. She has been a birder since childhood.
