Description: Ranked by Modern Library as the greatest English-language novel of the twentieth century, Ulysses has enthralled, infuriated, amused and/or perplexed its readers. For those willing to risk these reactions, this class will inquire whether this high regard is merited, whether Leopold Bloom is a fitting (or ironic?) modern surrogate for Homer’s Odysseus, whether the novel’s still-radical stylistic gymnastics warrant the time and mental agility required of a reader, and similar salient questions of our era.
