Consciousness has been the philosophical puzzle of the ages. Freud might have asked, “What is the unconscious and how does it affect what we think and do?” Jaynes flipped this issue on its head and would ask “What is consciousness and where did it come from?” We will discuss both theories and where they stand in the light of modern advances. We will read Freud’s Psychopathology of Everyday Life and some essays by and about Jaynes.
