Hop aboard our chartered coach bus for a relaxing ride to Owls Head Transportation Museum where we will spend the morning touring the museum's collection of more than 150 antique automobiles, aircraft, motorcycles, bicycles, engines and more.

We will return to Rockland at noon where we will have time for lunch on our own, gallery visits, shopping, or a visit to the Center for Maine Contemporay Art.

Then we'll gather for a docent-led tour of new exhibits at the Farnsworth Museum:

On a Mountain in Maine

Featuring works by Fitz Henry Lane, John Joseph Enneking, Marsden Hartley, James Fitzgerald, Andrew Winter, and Carl Sprinchorn. The tour will explore the physical, spiritual, and cultural landscape of Maine’s mountains as depicted in paintings, poetry, and literature through the lens of the historical record and Wabanaki myth and legend.

Andrew Wyeth's World War I

Originally conceived in 2002 by Andrew Wyeth, this exhibition affords visitors an opportunity to see how a childhood interest in the first World War grew into a lifelong source of inspiration. Born in 1917, Andrew Wyeth was too young to remember the war firsthand, but it became real to him through his father N.C. Wyeth’s studio where N.C. painted several large-scale canvases of World War I heroics and collected uniforms, weapons, and photographs for source material.

Slab City Rendezvous

Slab City Rendezvous, whose title comes from a 1964 painting by Red Grooms, features the work of a group of young New York-based avant-garde artists who in the years following World War II discovered the pleasures of summering and working in Maine. They became some of the most successful and important artists of their generation, charting new directions for contemporary art. Their work presented a return to realism and figuration in the face of Abstract Expressionism, the style then dominating the increasingly important center of international contemporary art in New York.  The exhibition will include works by Rudy Burckhardt, Lois Dodd, Rackstraw Downes, Red Grooms, Mimi Gross, Yvonne Jacquette, Alex Katz, Neil Welliver, and Bernard Langlais, among others.

Stories of the Land and its People 2019

Stories of the Land and Its People is a yearlong arts-integration initiative in which the Farnsworth Art Museum facilitates in-depth partnerships with local schools, artists, and community members to connect the arts to curricular learning standards. This program explores student and teacher curiosity through art, inquiry, creativity, and interactive learning experiences. Stories provides professional development opportunities for teachers and artists, free online resources for all educators, private arts-integration consultations, and various multi-visit arts-integration programs led by the Arts in Education Program Manager.

The Stories 2019 Exhibition celebrates the work created by over 155 elementary and middle school students and teachers who took part in the 2018-2019 Stories program.

We will return to MDI in the late afternoon.

Cost for the trip is $65 per person which includes bus transportation and entrance fees to both museums. Lunch is not included.
