Twilight in the Wilderness
June 11, 2020
Ann Caswell will examine the iconic Maine landscape painting by Frederic Edwin Church. She will discuss how each element in the composition reveals aspects of the ideological currents of the early 19th century. We will see how this work by Church is connected to the works of Cole, Emerson, and Thoreau, among others. In this way, we can explore political, spiritual, economic, artistic, and scientific trends from the era of the New England Renaissance of the 1830s up to the time of the Civil War.
The presentation will be offered via Zoom. It is expected to be about an hour and a half, with a short break in the middle and a few minutes for Q&A at the end.
