Havana Restaurant, Bar Harbor, and on Zoom

Please join our special guest Eloise Vitelli, Democrate, Maine State Senate Majority Leader, and a Mystery Republican Voice Guest who will engage on why the Democratic and Republican party offers the best path forward for American society over the next ten years.

Each Advocate is invited to think beyond the predictable polarities of daily political life to address a more fundamental view: why their party offers the best path for American society over the next ten years. They will build their case from what they believe their party has done and proposed, and the communities their party can mobilize. They will address how government, led by their party, will invest to meet the major challenges and opportunities of the next ten years and how America can afford such investment. Each Advocate will highlight the challenges their opposing party faces in leading America forward.

Coffee, tea, and pastries begin at 8:30 and the discussion begins at 9:00.

This event is open to the public, but registration is required. The cost to attend in person at Havana is $10 per person, payable at the door by cash or check, and includes coffee, tea, and pastries.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the discussion starts at 9:00 a.m.

Senator Eloise Vitelli has made Arrowsic her home for the last 40 years. She represents Senate District 24 in the Maine Senate, which includes all of Sagadahoc County and the town of Dresden in Lincoln County. She was first elected to the Maine Senate during a special election in 2013.

Sen. Vitelli has been an active member of her community, having served on the zoning board of appeals in her hometown of Arrowsic, the local school committee and the Regional School Unit 1 School Board. She also has served on the Mid Coast Economic Development District, and currently serves on the board of Kennebec Estuary Land Trust.

She began her professional life as an early childhood teacher and spent a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer working with the Maine Women’s Lobby. Recently retired after 38 years, she worked with New Ventures Maine, a statewide organization that helps Maine people create their own path to a career by finding jobs, continuing with education or starting a small business. The Maine Small Business Administration has recognized Sen. Vitelli’s career in economic development, which also included serving for many years on the Maine Economic Growth Council. In 1995 she was inducted into the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame.

Sen. Vitelli is the mother of two grown sons, and lives with her husband, Bob, in the home she built in Arrowsic after attending the Shelter Institute. Surrounded by gardens and her chickens, she believes that it’s important to work hard for what you have, and that together, Mainers can do great things.

“Consistent with the indigenous worldview that recognizes each plant as a being with its own will, it is understood that plants come when and where they are needed. They find their way to the place where they can fulfill their roles.”

Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer, 2003

There are more than 400 species of lichens in Acadia National Park. In this presentation, Carol Leonard will concentrate on two species of lichens growing wild at her farm, Bad Beaver Farm: Lobaria pulmonaria [Lungwort Lichen] and Usnea spp. [Old Man’s Beard] and their respective medicinal properties. Carol has been working closely with both of these lichens since the Spring of 2020 and the beginning of the pandemic.

This will be a short talk about “So what IS a lichen anyway?” and then a hands-on demonstration of how to identify, tincture, and store these two lichens for future medicinal use. (There will also be a follow-up visit to Bad Beaver Farm in May 2023.)

The luncheon, at Birch Bay Village in Hulls Cove, begins at 11:30 and costs $15, payable by cash or check at the door; the lecture is from noon to 1:00.

The Zoom presentation begins at noon. If you register for the online talk you will receive the link the day before. There is no charge for the Zoom presentation.

Carol Leonard is a retired midwife, a Maine Master naturalist, and is the author of several books including her midwifery memoir Lady’s Hands, Lion’s Heart, A Midwife’s Saga and Bad Beaver Tales, Love and Life in Downeast Maine.
